Welcome Back!
Weekly Routine for "Homework"Please help to make your student's academic success a priority. When we are able to work together at home and at school, your child has a successful year.
In class, we have talked about creating study habits at home and the kinds of things this means. These are the nightly routines that we do to keep our skills fresh so we can continue to master and build on them. These are "Study Skills" - This is math and reading for about 30-45 minutes a night. Reviewing skills, reading/listening to books and practicing skills. Throughout the week, we sometimes do not complete an entire task during the given work time. This is for a various number of reasons and sometimes needs to be completed at home- this is "homework." Practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent! Cursive4th Grade:
We will be doing a review and some practice. It is not mandatory to write assignments in cursive, but many students find their writing neater and easier to do when they have the cursive down. STEM Fun!Throughout the year, we will spend time doing STEM activities on Friday's.
STEM stands for: Science Technology Engineering Math Paperplate Pinball: build a pinball machine for a marble to stay on the path of your maze Save Fred: Get Fred into his life preserver without touching him or allowing him to fall into the water! We have built a tower with spaghetti noodles and marshmallows and completed a cup tower using team work and string. Please ask your student throughout the month what STEM activity that he/she was able to participate in Reading4th:
Unit 3 That's the Spirit! 5th: Unit 3 Getting From Here to There Essential Question: Comprehension Strategy: Questioning and predicting Strategies: Connections, Visualizing, Questioning, Predicting, Inferring, Compare/Contrast, and summarizing WritingWriting an expository piece about a topic
Writing a personal narrative Writing a friendly letter- what are the components and how do we change it according to our audience- BuddiesWe have our buddies from Mrs. Rickett's kindergarten classroom!
November: Being thankful, friends, inclusion December: |

Spelling ListScience: We are going to be working through Project Lead The Way at Eagle Cliffs this year! Exciting new science and hands-on activities!
*Engineer- someone who sees a problem, comes up with an idea and works to find a solution to the problem to make something better *Structure- how is something made, the design, and make-up of an object *Function- what is the object's purpose, what is it for? Force, Energy, Potential energy, Kinetic energy - Collisions! Building pendulums and vehicles- be sure to ask your students all about what they have built and are building and how it relates to energy and force!! We are talking about the scientific process and what that looks like. Questions Hypothesis (own prediction) Experiment (actually try it out) Observe and Record what you see, hear, smell, taste, and/or touch Analyze- think about what happened and write about it Share- tell others your findings MathWe are implementing a math curriculum this year called Go! Math! Look for our chapter notes to come home throughout the year so you know what we are working on. It also has fantastic online components that I will be putting on the weebly for easy access for students at home.
5th: Decimals: Video Tutorials: Decimal Place Value Writing Number as Decimal and Fraction Adding Decimals Practice adding decimals Subtracting Decimals Multply Decimals Dividing Decimals Geometry: Looking at shapes, edges, angles, 3-dimensional shapes, volume, and components of geometry including the vocabulary Multiplying multiple digit numbers (542 x 342) Decimals: comparing, adding, subtracting, ordering (also as fractions) 4th: Math Chapter One: Working in Place Value -reviewing place value through millions -standard, expanded, written forms: Standard 5,361 Expanded: 5000 + 300 + 60 + 1 Rounding: Look at the place value that you are being asked to round to. Look "right" to the neighbor on its right. If the number is 0-4 the place value will stay the same, if it is 5-9 then the place value will get to move up 1 number. After you decide what the number of the place value will be, all numbers to its right become a zero. Example: 547 - round to the nearest 10 becomes 550, but, round to the nearest 100, it becomes 500 Addition and Subtraction Review: We are reviewing basic addition, subtraction and borrowing and regrouping. Please continue to support them at home through their homework. This is a tough concept to really master. Chapter Two: Using Multiplication- we spent time reviewing basic multiplication and the rules that we can use to help us solve problems using multiplication -Review this at home every night as well Now we are working through how to use multiplication to compare sizes and solve problems. Chapter Three: Multiple Digit Multiplication -Area Model (partial product) Example -Lattice Method: VIDEO -Expanded Form 13 x 35 = (10+3) x (30+5) 10 x 5 = 50 3 x 5 = 15 30 x 10 = 300 30 x 3 = 90 Then add: 50 + 15 + 300 + 90 = 455 VIDEO Standard Algorithm: VIDEO VIDEO 2 Chapter Four: Division Dividing with a remainder VIDEO Chapter Five: Number patterns- multiples, factors, prime and composite numbers Chapter Six-Nine: Fractions --equivalent fractions --simplest form -- common multiples 5th Grade: Chapt. 1: Place Value and Patterns: understanding that in order to go from 30 to 300 that 300 is 10 times bigger than 30 and that 30 is 1/10 of 300 |
